Grunberg Residence
A project by Peter Schultze Construction
A masterful blend of timeless craftsmanship and modern luxury, this award-nominated Victoria custom home is a testament to thoughtful design and superior quality.
This stunning home in Victoria, BC, was designed by Sebastian Butler of DGBK Architects and built by Peter Schultze Construction Ltd. The Grunberg Residence was a finalist in the prestigious Georgie Awards in 2009, placing in the top five out of more than 90 entries—an achievement that speaks to the exceptional craftsmanship, premium materials, and thoughtful design.

The new design carefully preserves the character of the original home, incorporating Arts and Crafts influences with a touch of Provence, reflected in the landscape features, window trims, and intricate wrought iron railings. Rich, natural materials were used throughout, including a heavy timber veranda, a striking stone base, slate roof tiles, and elegant wood windows.

Inside, the grand interiors are defined by dark-stained wood contrasted with crisp white trims, complemented by dark granite counters and stunning feature flooring.

At the heart of the home, a sweeping curved staircase in the entrance hall connects the main and upper floors, illuminated by a skylight and adorned with an antique chandelier. The great room overlooks a sunken court via a French balcony, creating a seamless connection between the main living areas and the lower level.

The homeowner was deeply committed to achieving the highest level of quality and detail while ensuring the residence blended harmoniously with the surrounding neighborhood—an ambition masterfully realized through meticulous and sensitive design. This home also incorporates the latest in energy-efficient technology, featuring high-efficiency instant hot water heaters, a forced air heating system, and a heat pump for both heating and cooling.
